Fezzari Solitude review

Do you have a cross-county specialist in your clan? Does your teen race in a middle school or high school NICA league? Do you want to save hundreds- if not thousands of dollars on a race-ready carbon frame hardtail 29er? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we would like to introduce your family to the Fezzari Solitude.

Fezzari Hails From The Wasatch – Not The Dolomites

Fezzari bikes are designed in Utah along the corridor of the Silicon Slopes – the state’s geographic swath of startups and technology companies at the foot of the Wasatch mountains. We love this area for it’s mountain biking opportunities with access to single track in the foothills and bike parks up the canyons. Now this local bike company is making an impression on the bike industry as well.

Fezzari Factory Store sign
Fezzari frame prototype / model

We’ve been aware of the Fezzari brand for several years. Naturally- they’re quite popular in our neck-of-the-woods. Based in the town of Lehi, the Fezzari factory store and warehouse was less than an hour drive from the house. When I arrived to pick up our demo, I was greeted by Jordan and he told me, “The company has been steadily growing, and we’re moving into a larger space soon.” That’s a testament to the fact that exclusively selling online is working. A large part of this relies on accurately fitting customers to a bike based on measurements and other data supplied.

It’s all part of Fezzari’s 23-Point Custom Setup. Jordan also stated, “We realize that spending $500-$5,000 on a bike sight unseen via our direct to consumer sales model still requires a leap of faith. Fezzari removes those barriers by offering award winning, world-class bikes, at a savings of 30%-40% compared to other companies selling through the dealer model.”

Quality Frames Backed Up With A Lifetime Warranty And Growing Accolades

Fezzari also backs up their frames with a lifetime warranty and a 30-day “Love It Or Return It” policy. Their website states that if you don’t think you and your bike are a match made in heaven after riding it for 30 days, your can return it for a refund. Fezzari will even cover the shipping.

Another reason why Fezzari is growing is because their bikes are good. Their enduro model, the La Sal Peak, won Bike Magazine’s award for the best long travel bike under $4,000.

Fezzari Solitude Overview

The Fezzari Solitude comes in three sizes and can be fit with either 27.5+ or 29 inch wheels. Our demo was set up with 29 inch wheels. You can choose from a 16 inch, 18 inch or 20 inch frame. The Solitude is designed to fit a rider with a standover height ranging from 27.5 inches through 31.5 inches. Three build options are available for the Solitude where the Elite Race specs govern carbon wheels. We got the Solitude Comp which featured WTB wheels. With the stock seat post and pedals, our bike weighed in at 25.6 lbs.

Frames Built For Durability And Performance

Monoform carbon molds used for the Solitude result in a single-piece frame that does not have joints. Many other bike brands build up a front triangle and a rear triangle that need to be bonded together. With the elimination of joints in the frame, Fezzari’s technology allows the use of longer carbon fibers. Sans junctions and bonded sections, Fezzari’s frames are light, strong, stiff, and responsive.

Riding The Fezzari Solitude

In our opinion, a hardtail cross-country steed’s directive is simply: be light – be fast. The test rider for this bike review is a Wyatt  – our 16 year old kid who is a whopping 6ft, 1in tall and can spend hours in the saddle. A 20-inch size frame was selected based our guinea pig’s size and he was immediately impressed with how light the bike was. We outfitted our demo with clipless pedals and an internally routed Raceface dropper post. Installing the dropper was made easier by using a nifty Park Tool Internal Cable Routing Kit.

Fezzari Solitude mountain bike review

It took a couple of rides to get used to the bike. But right from that start, the Solitude stood out as a comfortable climber. The bike’s geometry and crank length were great for getting full extension on the pedals. The wide bar width  opened up the shoulders to allow for getting air into the engine. The stiff carbon frame was easy to control when the occasional opportunity for a front wheel lift presented itself.

Climbing rocky singletrack, Fezzari Solitude review
Fezzari Solitude in the autumn grass

Our test rider is old enough to remember the dark days of kid bikes that were heavy and cumbersome. Recent years have bid adieu to front derailleurs, crummy suspension forks, and cheap 26-inch wheels. Nothing was taken for granted when powering through rides with the Solitude’s [Comp build] 1x drivetrain, air fork, and quality 29-inch wheels.

Fezzari Solitude review

Following his second outing on the bike, our rider told us “I’m used to riding a long travel trail bike and descending with the Solitude took a bit of discovery. Once I figured out how to keep my feet ‘heavy’ on the pedals and my hands ‘light’ on the bars, the bike added a new element of fun and confidence.”

Descending with speed on the Fezzari Solitude

Racing The Fezzari Solitude

One of our objectives when receiving this bike was to get our rider out racing on it. In addition to competing in regional enduro events, Wyatt is on a Utah NICA team. He’s not as competitive in cross-country events as the gravity disciplines, so we were eager to see how having the right tool for the job would influence his race results.

Coming out of corner on Fezzari Solitude

The venue for the experiment was an 18 mile race; 3 laps x 6 miles with about 550 feet of elevation gain. The course featured 1.2 miles of dirt road for passing and separating the athletes prior to hitting singletrack.

MTB race on the Fezzari Solitude

Our racer said, “The bike pedaled great during the race. In open spaces, I was able to get up to speed quickly. Climbing was easier and I loved the 29-inch wheels. They rolled fast and smooth.”

In his category, Wyatt finished in 31st place on the Fezzari Solitude. At his previous race on his trail bike, Wyatt finished in 38th place. In our opinion, the bike made a big difference and allowed him to increase his overall position.

And to further sweeten the deal, Fezzari offers an additional incentive pricing to registered NICA racers and coaches. See fezzari.com/highschool for live pricing and more information

Consider The Solitude Among The Crowd Of Carbon Hardtails

Do your research and compare the Solitude’s frame and build options against all the competition – large brands and small. You will be hard pressed to find a bike that can beat the Fezzari Solitude and save you at least hundreds of dollars. Just take some simple measurements at home to determine the correct fit and you can own a premium carbon xc race bike at a very good cost. And, Fezzari’s warranty coupled with their 30 day money back guarantee removes all the fences people attribute to the online only sales model.

Fox Youth Ranger Shorts Review

label
Fox Ranger Racing Cargo Shorts review

We have a hard time finding mountain biking shorts that fit our skinny kids’ waists while not being too short. The Fox Youth Ranger shorts are specifically designed for mountain biking. These sturdy shorts have withstood several months of summer riding including a slide-out crash that removed a few layers of skin under the shorts – which did not rip.

We highly recommend getting mountain bike specific shorts for your young rider. Although your kid can definitely ride a bike in any shorts they have, mountain bike shorts have some added features to make riding more enjoyable.

The Fox Youth Ranger Shorts include:

  • Stretchy polyester fabric – importantly, these shorts are comfortable, quick drying, and lightweight.
  • Adjustable waistband – this feature will cinch to fit now. Then grow with your kid to fit them later.
  • Good sized leg holes – particularly important when riding with knee pads.
  • Detachable padded spandex liner – give your kiddo some added comfort for those longer mountain bike rides
  • Pockets! – these shorts include two hand pockets and two cargo pockets. The left pocket has a zip closure (perfect for a lift pass); the right has a Velcro closure.
  • Fox Ranger Racing Cargo Shorts review

Our son has worn the Fox Ranger Shorts on many of our family trips and adventures. We highly recommend Fox Youth Ranger shorts!

Yakima Hangover 6 Review mountain bike rack for families

When I first learned the Yakima Hangover Bike Rack was being produced, I was eager to get a hold of one. I wanted to compare it against the other vertical hang style racks we have come across including the North Shore NSR 6-Bike and the Alta Racks GPR.

NOTE: Our review is for the Yakima Hangover 6 Bike Rack , which of course holds up to 6 bikes. The Hangover 4 is also available from: Amazon | Backcountry | Jenson USA

The Design Concept Behind The Yakima Hangover 6

The Yakima Hangover 6 follows a similar approach as other vertical racks. A mast extends vertically from your vehicle’s hitch and 2 perpendicular bars span the width of your car.

These 2 perpendicular bars (horizontal with the ground), are the base for attaching the crown of your bike and its rear wheel. Rotate a “H” 90º and you’ll get the picture.

Unboxing the rack revealed a set of tools necessary for installation. There was also a hitch lock, and a set of well written and easy to understand instructions. In short, my wife and I were able to get everything put together in just under 20 minutes.

How The Yakima Hangover 6 Works

Here are the steps to load bikes onto the Yakima Hangover Bike Rack.

Step 1 – secure the fork

Firstly, lift your mountain bike up to nestle the suspension fork between the brace and post on the top bar. Secondly, pull the strong rubber chain strap over the fork and connect it to the knob on the rack. Now the top of your bike is secured . It’s a simple design. However, it took us a few tries to put bikes on correctly.

Step 2 – secure the rear wheel

Once your bike’s fork is resting in the cradle and the strap has been secured, the rear wheel should be hanging down freely. Next, secure the rear wheel to the lower horizontal bar. To do this, you’ll first tilt the bike towards the lower horizontal bar. Finally, fasten it against the wheel cup with locking plastic strap.

You need to load bikes on the Hangover 6 from left-to-right when facing the rear of your vehicle. This is so the next bike loaded can be “stacked” to the right without a previously loaded bike’s bars interfering. You’ll unload bikes right-to-left. Go ahead and try it in reverse if you enjoy a good struggle and/or don’t mind busting cables.

The bike’s crown gets nestled in cradle on the top horizontal bar of the rack.

Fastening a bike's rear wheel to the Yakima Hangover 6

The bike’s rear wheel gets attached to a cup on the lower horizontal bar.

The position of the cradles on the top horizontal bar are immobile. However, you can slide the wheel cups on the bottom horizontal bar by loosening them and shifting along the horizontal axis. We learned the best way to align the rear wheel to the wheel cup is to just let it hang naturally. Then position the wheel cup to where the rear tire will connect by pushing the rear wheel against the lower bar.

In this photo, you can see how much clearance there is between the bikes’ front wheels and the van’s rear end

Limitations With The Yakima Hangover Bike Racks…

  • This rack will not work with kids bikes with 20 inch wheels or smaller. When we tried putting a 20 inch wheel bike on the rack, it would not seat in the cradle to our liking. The smallest bikes we are using are: a Norco Fluid FS 1 with 24in wheels, a dirt jumper with 26 inch wheels, and a Trailcraft with 26 inch wheels. Some bikes with 24 inch wheels may not work.
  • It’s for mountain bikes with two stanchion suspension forks only. This is because the cradle system is engineered to safely secure the bike by a fork’s crown. Also, we could not figure out how to get a Cannondale with a Lefty fork on this rack.
  • The rack will only fit hitches with 2-inch receivers
Font wheel clearance - Yakima Hangover 6 on mini-van

The Hangover features a foot-operated tilt mechanism. You can adjust the angle of the rack for hauling bikes and accessing the rear of the vehicle. Compared to our old 1st gen Yakima Hold-Up, where locking and safety pins had to be removed and inserted, the Hangover 6 is a welcome addition to the family.

I read a negative review stating the rack did not work with well with a user’s mini-van. However, in our case, that’s simply not true. Although you can’t load bikes with the mast in the 90º position on our van, there is plenty of clearance when the mast is in its 2nd position.

This foot pedal allows you to easily adjust the angle of the rack.

Cable loop on the Yakima Hangover

Bike Security For The Yakima Hangover

You can thread a cable lock and/or a chain lock through the welded loop on the back of the mast to secure your bikes. You know the best way to keep your bikes secure is to always keep them in sight. But if you’re in the market for some additional security – we choose some of the best bike locks for your mountain bikes here.

Loading bikes on the Yakima Hangover is not as easy as a loading a tray style rack. For one thing, you have to raise the fork’s crown above the top cradle. A lot of younger and/or shorter people will not be able to do this comfortably- if at all. Additionally, you also have to make sure the strap on the top cradle is in the correct position so you can gain purchase and thread it over the crown and fasten it properly. With practice, this is getting easier for us.

Youth loading Yakima Hangover mountain bike rack

So far, the ground clearance for the Yakima Hangover has been an improvement vs. our old Hold-Up tray system. Due to the angle of our driveway and depending on the weight in the van, the old rack would scrape the pavement when backing out of the driveway. After we installed the Hangover 6 and fixed the mast to its highest setting, there was no scraping.

Driving Off With The Yakima Hangover Mountain Bike Rack

The Yakima Hangover 6 is ideal for our family for a few reasons. Firstly, my wife and I are NICA coaches. Secondly, our family of 4 often rides with friends. In the past, we had to take 2 cars in order to get 6 riders with bikes to the trails. Now, with the Hangover 6, we can easily get 6 full-sized bikes and 6 riders to the single track or a venue in our mini-van.

We’re looking forward to how durable the Hangover 6 is, too. We keep the rack on our van all year long due to frequent trips to the desert in the winter months. However, some of the parts on the Hangover are constructed of plastic as opposed to forged steel unlike other bike racks in this category. Will the plastic parts wear down and crack as January and February roll by? Time will tell. In the mean time, we are ready to use this rack often. It’s a well-priced, functional piece of equipment for mountain bikers who need to get more bikes on cars.

MyMedic First Aid Kit Review

label
MyMedic first aid kit review for mountain bikers

When your family is ready to embrace mountain biking in all its glory despite risk and consequences, a first aid kit is mandatory. It doesn’t matter if you’re out on paved trails with a tyke in a bike trailer or riding single track in the backcountry. You never know what will happen on the trails. Certainly, a well-stocked kit, like the MyMedic MyFAK (First Aid Kit), is a necessity.

A First Aid Kit For Mountain Bikers

The MyFAK comes in two different versions – basic and advanced. Certainly, this kit is a great choice for mountain biking families, NICA coaches, and hikers. We own the basic version, which includes items for repairing wounds, like liquid skin, gauze rolls, and bandages in various sizes. Additionally, it has a splint and a CPR shield.

MyMedic myFAK used for treating injury
All fixed up - MyMedic, MyFAK review

We have had to use the kit to attend to a few small injuries since we received it during the summer. In addition to a couple of small cuts and abrasions on NICA team rides, the largest injury we used the kit for was a large cut on a rider’s shin. We happened upon a dad who was riding with his daughters in Park City and one of the women had a cut on her leg. Their small peel-and-stick bandages were not doing much to get pressure on the wound. To stop the bleeding, they ended up using a medium-sized gauze with tape from our MyFAK.

What You Get With The MyMedic MyFAK

This first aid kit for mountain bikers contents leave you prepared for many small injuries. Firstly, the MyFAK includes “specialty items” like a thermometer, shears, and a penknife. Secondly, it also boasts as topical items, such as lip balm, antibacterial ointment, and saline solution. Thirdly, this set includes the traditional band-aids, tape and gauze. Finally, it includes medication like over-the-counter painkillers, Benadryl, and even Pepto-Bismol. Importantly, there’s one interesting difference – a survival rescue blanket and a rescue whistle are also included. This means that should someone in your ride group end up getting separated from others while on the trail, there are a few things in this handy kit to help protect them until help arrives.

The MyMedic MyFAK Is Easy To Take With You

Surprisingly, the MyFAK First Aid Kit is small enough to fit inside of a hydration pack. It measures a compact 4 inches by 6.75 inches by 7.75 inches and weighs a little less than two and a half pounds.

There is no reason not to carry this extra-sturdy nylon (600 Denier nylon, for the record) kit around. For this purpose, it’s designed with handy D-rings so that it can be attached to a strap, as well as a useful handle. Undeniably tough, it’s also water-resistant. Another positive aspect – this pack comes in several different colors, so that you can match this first aid kit for mtb families to a bike.

Final Thoughts On The MyMedic MyFAK

Overall, the MyFAK First Aid Kit is extremely handy and includes many things that might be needed while on the trail. For this reason, it has just become habit to carry it with us when we ride. Because its contents are too important to leave behind. Given that its size and weight don’t interfere with our long trail rides. Finally – as the saying goes, it’s better to have a first aid kit like this and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it.

Enduro Bikes For Kids

label
The best enduro bikes for kids

Look at the standover heights on these bikes and choose the best fitting one for your junior enduro racer! We selected bikes with 24-inch wheels or extra-small or small adult sizes with 27.5-inch wheels. There are some great deals to be had, too! Several of these enduro bikes for kids are priced to move.

The term “enduro” technically refers to a race format, not a bike type. Enduro races are multi-stage races that take place over 1-2 days. Only the descents are timed so racing uphill is not a necessity.  In general, climbing can be slow and steady to make the cut-off time for transitioning between stages.

Thus, enduro bikes for kids aren’t a separate category of mountain bikes. In contrast, they’re just kids’ bikes suitable for technical downhill trails as well as climbing. An adult “enduro bike” is typically a full suspension bike with medium travel. The same applies for kids’ enduro bikes. However, because children weigh less, many of these bikes can also be used as kids’ downhill mountain bikes.

You can see even more bikes suitable for enduro in our lists for kids’ mountain bikes for 8-11 years old and mountain bikes for kids 11-14 years old.

Trailcraft Maxwell 24

Trailcraft Maxwell 24

The Trailcraft Maxwell 24 is burly enough for smaller and lighter riders to use on advanced technical trails. Importantly, the bike’s weight helps avoiding a bonk on stage transfers. When you visit the Trailcraft site, you’ll be impressed by all the options for this kid-sized powerhouse of an enduro bike. The Maxwell 24 is easily one of our our favorites for the younger enduro crowd.

Santa Cruz Bronson Carbon

Santa Cruz Bronson C S

The Santa Cruz Bronson is a popular mountain bike with the NICA crowd in Utah. For one thing, the 27.5 wheels on an extra-small or small frame is an excellent fit for kids who still need to grow into a 29-inch wheel. Additionally, the carbon frame is light and strong. Most importantly, the VPP suspension system provides the perfect ride. The Bronson’s redesigns over the last few years have not changed its legendary strength, stiffness, and handling. In this case, you can’t go wrong with the Santa Cruz Bronson.
